        1. The correct term is “tooltip text” or “title text,” so called because the HTML “title” attribute directs the image to display a tooltip when the mouse hovers over it. Earlier non-standards-compliant browsers such as Internet Explorer 7 incorrectly rendered text in alt attributes as tooltip text. The “alt” attribute is meant to provide an alternate, textual rendering of the image–which is useful, for example, to a visually impaired person using a screen reader.

          So basically, whenever you refer to it as alt-text, you’re discriminating against the blind.
